Manager Operations: Milk and Feeding

Grade: D4

 

Purpose of Position

The incumbent is responsible for dairy farming operations, overseeing both long-term strategic direction and day-to-day efficiency in the feeding and milk department. This involves a multifaceted approach, balancing strategic planning and hands-on management to ensure smooth functioning across critical areas such as biosecurity, herd care, nutrition, people management and project execution. Ultimately aiming to enhance overall performance and sustainability of the dairy farm, while fostering a cohesive and productive team.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Honours degree or post graduate diploma in Agriculture/ Animal Science / Nutrition or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience, with direct experience working on a dairy farm and 5 years should have been at managerial level.
  • Proven experience in dairy farm management, focusing on feeding programs and milk production.
  • Strong knowledge of animal nutrition, herd management, and industry best practices.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to manage teams and drive operational excellence.
  • A commitment to quality, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong work ethic.
  • Code B Driver’s License.

 

Preferred Advantages:

  • An equivalent of 15-years working experience in the Dairy Industry (without a formal qualification).
  • Knowledge of the Afikim herd data management System.
  • Knowledge of the DTM/LMI feeding data management system.
  • Experience with SAP system.

 

Key accountabilities:

  • Formulating and Implementing the Dairy and Feeding strategy in line with operational and long-term strategic goals and objectives of Namibia Dairies.
  • Provide direction and oversee the management and implementation of projects.
  • Advise and coordinate feed logistics operations including ordering, delivery, and storage of feed from suppliers while adhering to required service levels and strategy to drive least cost principles.
  • Manage all aspects of milk production, including milking procedures, hygiene standards, and equipment maintenance.
  • Overseeing day-to-day activities related to feeding programs, milk production, and herd management, ensuring adherence to high standards of hygiene, health, and quality control.
  • Employing expertise in animal nutrition, herd selection, and insemination practices to optimize breeding, enhance herd genetics, and improve pregnancy success rates.
  • Enhance the operational framework governing breeding and bull selection by consistently refining processes and protocols related to herd selection, breeding, and bull choice.
  • Analyze and determine the optimal timing based on days in milk and weight for inseminating cows and heifers, ensuring precision in insemination timing to elevate the pregnancy success rate.
  • Strategically select semen to augment herd genetics and genetic diversity effectively.
  • Manage feed stock management through weekly stock accounts, correct storage according to ISO standards and feed stock loss management and reporting.
  • Strategically manage and optimize animal health protocols to align with overarching organizational goals and objectives.
  • Implement robust biosecurity measures to safeguard the milk department against potential risks and diseases.
  • Manage departmental finances, including budget preparation, cost controls, approvals, and reporting, in alignment with organizational policies.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timeous reports on feed requirements and herd growth projections as and when required.
  • Lead and manage teams, fostering a culture of operational excellence, and driving continuous improvement in processes related to animal health, genetics, and feed stock management.
