Debmarine Namibia requires the services of a Vessel Master. To efficiently and safely manage the vessel on-board activities to achieve the objectives of the company and ensure compliance with all company policies/ standards and legal requirements. To ensure that the vessel reliably deliver the right work.

The incumbent will be required to spend a minimum of 28 days at sea followed by a maximum of 28 days ashore.

Job Description

IN THE ROLE AS A VESSEL MASTER YOU WILL BE REQUIRED AMONGST OTHERS TO:

  • Commanding and managing the ship and personnel at all times to ensure the safety and efficient operations of the ship and the ship’s complement; and that navigation, operation and maintenance comply with company policy and legal requirements.
  • Responsible for overall on-board management and discipline on the vessel.
  • Navigates and deploy vessel as per instruction from shore-based office responsible for the short term mine plan, for operations to ensure that all objectives will be met timeously.
  • Overall responsible for on-board training.
  • Setting on-board goals in line with the operational plans to support company objectives
  • Adheres to safety and operational standards and manages vessel operation requirements with respect to refuelling, tug, launches, spread laying, bad weather etc.
  • Checks and maintains the company documentation, official log book and legal documentation as required by the Flag State, Port State, Harbour authorities, Customs and Excise Authorities, Immigration Authorities, Government bodies and company policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to and ensures compliance with company policies, procedures, standards and safety management system.
  • Optimises the effectiveness of the vessel
  • Ensure that all marine and operational activities are carried out according to legal requirements using his discretion and experience to determine the most efficient means of operation through the Appointment as Master of the vessel in terms of the Merchant Shipping act and as Subordinate Mine Manager in terms of the Mine Works and Mineral Ordinance.
  • Ensures Compliance with relevant marine and mining legislation including the International Safety Management code, OHSAS 18001, Environmental Management System, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safety Programs etc. Manages all formalities in connection with ship’s Articles of Agreement by signing crew on and off Articles, changing Articles at prescribed times and officially reporting same to the Flag State Authority.
  • Coordinating and monitoring all statutory and multi-disciplinary aspects and provide guidance and implements corrective steps to ensures that the vessel is fully equipped to proceed to sea, and is seaworthy at all times by.
  • Monitors the application of the relevant rules and regulations pertaining to the security of confidential material and makes continuous proposals to shore management to ensure that all policies, rules and regulations remain applicable at all times.
  • Chairs Diamond Value Management meeting on-board to meet security and loss of product, makes recommendations to shore based management for on-going process improvements.
  • Monitors external radio communications between ship and shore to ensure correct procedures, according to legal requirements and established practices and provide guidance as required.

Qualifications

DO YOU MEET THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS?

  • Valid STCW 95 (Class 1) Masters Foreign Going / Mining endorsed certificate of competency.
  • A minimum of 5 years as a Chief Navigating Officer holding the above-mentioned certificate.
